Abstract
Using the XBeach morphodynamic model the erosion and flooding of the northeast coast of the Crimean Peninsula – the Arabat spit under the influence of wind waves and storm surges of the Sea of Azov was studied. Using reanalysis and field observations, for required simulation, parameters of wind wave and storm surges near the spit were estimated for storms possible once a year and once every 5, 10, 25 and 50 years. The calculations were carried out as part of the one-dimensional problem for the typical transverse profile of the spit, including the beach, quarry and the main spit body. It is shown that for storms possible 1 year about half of the beach erodes, and deformations do not reach the quarry. For storms possible 1 time in 25 and 50 years the entire beach and the quarry slope adjacent to the main spit body are subject to erosion. It was revealed that the combination of strong storm surges and intense wind waves is the main condition for the erosion and flooding of the spit. Excluding storm surges, the model does not reproduce erosion and flooding of the spit.
