Abstract

The simple and effective method is given when one observer is allowed to quickly measure the sandy and pebbly beach profiles on any part of the coastal zone without using expensive and sophisticated equipment. The basis of the proposed technique, belonging to the class of trigonometric leveling, is obtaining a piecewise linear approximation (PLA) of the true curve corresponding to the beach surface profile using a three-component accelerometer. A set of measurements of the angle of inclination of a beach surface on adjacent segments, the length of which is recorded as the base distance for use in the processing of the initial data, is made along the transverse section. Examples of the use of the G-sensor readings embedded in mass production devices during the monitoring works on the coast of the Western Crimea are given. The main methodological aspects of measuring, processing initial data and plan-height attachment of profiles are described. It is shown that the accuracy of the obtained beach profiles meets the requirements of the results of monitoring and reconnaissance work. The layout of the prototype electronic device for measuring coastal zone profiles using a three-component accelerometer, a GPS module and recording the results on an SD card is presented.
