Abstract

In the review article that opens a special issue, the hydrometeorological and geomorphological conditions of the Bakalskaya Spit are considered. It is a unique object of the northwestern Crimean coast. It is noted that the region belongs to territories and water areas with a reserved status. Based on the observations, the hydrometeorological conditions (wind, wave, level, ice, thermohaline properties of water) are considered. Processing of long-term satellite and contact measurements, analysing the ancient maps, the qualitative and quantitative shoreline dynamics and the evolution of the morphology of the Bakalskaya Spit and adjacent areas are discussed. The hypotheses of the Bakalskaya Spit formation and the role of sediment flows are considered. It is stated that there is still no forecast for the further evolution of the Bakalskaya Spit and the surrounding natural complex, which should be based on comprehensive study, including field observations and mathematical modeling of natural processes.
