Laboratory Study of the Mechanism of Submesoscale Vortices Formation on the Black Sea Shelf

Abstract

A laboratory study of the mechanism of vortices formation on the shelf as a result of shear instability in case the flow of obstacle like a cape with steep bypass and spatially nonuniform wind influence is carried out. A rotating platform in a cylindrical or square basin filled with liquid is used in the experiments. The conditions for vortex formation are determined. The results are successfully compared with in situ data obtained in the cruises near the coastal zone in Gelendzhik in 2009 – 2011.
