      <abstract>
        <p>Artificial beaches are one of the most effective methods of protecting shores and hydraulic structures in conditions of natural beach-forming material shortage. Using the example of the coastal area of the Koktebel village (Feodosia, Crimea), the article examines the change in the erosion zone width of an artificial pebble beach located in front of a steep concrete hydraulic wall under the impact of extreme storms. Based on wind wave reanalysis data obtained using the SWAN spectral model and ERA-Interim and ERA5 surface wind fields for 1979–2020, calculations of the storm power index were carried out in the central part of Koktebel Bay. 146 storm situations with a duration of at least 12 hours were identified. Three most extreme storms were analyzed: by power index (660 m²·h) – the storm of January 26–29, 1988; by average significant wave height (3.6 m) – the storm of November 10–11, 2007; by duration (95 h) – the storm of September 25–29, 2017. For the first and second storms, based on the one-dimensional version of the XBeach numerical model (eXtreme Beach behavior), storm deformations of the profile of an artificial pebble beach adjacent to a steep concrete wall were calculated. It is shown that under the impact of storm waves, the steepness of the coast near the edge gradually changes and the material slides from the nearshore part of the beach down the underwater slope. This leads to a local decrease in depth near the shore. It is established that the width of the erosion zone of the underwater part of the beach is three times greater than that of the above-water part. The most significant deformations of the beach profile occur during the first 6 hours of storms, then the deformation rate slows down. The retreat of the coastline under the impact of an extreme storm for the study area can reach 10 m. With an average size of beach-forming material of 30 mm for the coastal zone of Koktebel Bay, beaches with a width of 20 m or more can completely dampen the wave energy of extreme storms and sufficiently perform protective functions.</p>
